Snow day …… part two

Following on …

As I said in the previous blog post we managed to get another downpour of snow in the space of 3 weeks so this time I decided on some colour film namely Kodak Portra 400VC expired using my Nikon F100 and both the 50mm f1.4 and my old Nikkor 35-70 which isn’t the sharpest but its versatile.

I have shot a couple of rolls of this film previously and it was great but I don’t know if it was the cold weather along with slightly exhausted c41 chemistry but half of the frames seemed to have a colour cast which I didn’t bother correcting as I liked the look πŸ™‚

#BIFScale18 … my keepers from 2 rolls of 35mm Redscale …

Nikon F100 - Agfa Vista Redscale020

Just like last year over at Believeinfilm.comΒ there is a challenge to shoot and post Redscale images during February with the added bonus of prizes on offer.

Anyway here are my images that I liked taken with my Nikon F100 and both 50mm f1.4 & Nikkor 24-85mm VR.

I made some of my own Redscale using a roll of Agfa Vista 200 & Kodak Colorplus 200.

Shooting Redscale film is fun and the resultant images do surprise sometimes but also disappoint too … I was happy with 11 frames from my 2 rolls to be honest.

More lovely slide film … 1st time shooting Agfa CT Precisa 100

I have been shooting a lot of slide film over the last few weeks as I have some mixed E6 chemistry that will soon go off.

I used to be a big fan of cross processing E6Β  for 2 reasons … Firstly because I didn’t want to try home E6 processing and secondly was because I liked the unpredictability of the colour shifts.

Thanks to a twitter friend Sandeep @givemeabiscuit who is strongly against cross processing I decided to buy myself the Tetenal E6 and give it a go and have not looked back.

This was the 1st time that had tried Agfa CT Precisa 100 and after a bit of searching on the web quite a few post were saying that it was very similar to Provia 100F or even the actual thing?

Whether or not it is a version of Provia who knows but what I can say is that its an excellent film that considering its a slide film it seems to have a wider latitude than most other E6 films that I have tried.

It seems to not totally blow the highlights and neither does it block up the shadows as can be seen in the above 3 images.

I will be buying more this film very soon as I love the colour that it produces which is quite vivid when shooting in bright sunshine but very natural when used in normal light.

Autumn colours with Kodak Ektachrome E100VS … part 2

Following on from my last post the day after shooting Ektachrome in 120 I loaded up my F100 with the 35mm version and headed out to see how it compared.

As with the 1st roll I set the meter to iso 80 but used a bit of exposure compensation on a few shots not to have muddy shadows.The first thing that was apparent was how much more Red the images were compared to the 120, both films were obviously expired the 120 was 2012 and this roll was 2009.

I am not sure how this roll was stored before I received it (it was a gift from a twitter photographer friend) but the previous roll had been fridge stored from new. That said I don’t think it harmed the look of the images in fact I quite like the overall Red feel.

There was a very slightly more pronounced grain compared to the 120 but if I had not shot/processed the roll the day before to have an instant comparison I don’t think I would have really noticed. The sharpness was pretty much identical even when I was shooting at f2.8 (it was too bright to get wide open at f1.4) Overall I was very happy with both rolls and I am really looking forward to getting my hands on the new re-issued version as soon as it comes out.

London, New York, Pontycymmer … Artist at work .. Kevin Sinnott

Over the last few weeks I have had the pleasure of spending time with world renowned artist Kevin Sinnott who lucky for me lives here in Pontycymmer where he also has his studio and his most excellent gallery “Studio 18”.

My first thoughts about this series of images was to shoot it completely on film which after my initial test shoots was not going to show how I pictured the project in my mind where I had some sort of control over the colours of the paintings.

So I used a mix of film & Digital hopefully to give a good overview of a working artist.

Before we start here is a very brief snippet about Kevin that I procured from the web….

Kevin Sinnott

Born in Sarn, South Wales in 1947, Kevin Sinnott is a contemporary Welsh artist with a truly international reputation. He trained at Cardiff College of Art & Design, Gloucestershire College of Art & Design and at the Royal College of Art, London. Kevin remained in London throughout the 1970s and 80s, building a very successful career, and exhibiting at leading London galleries, major galleries in the USA and mainland Europe.
Kevin’s work is collected worldwide and he is represented in many important public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. His large canvas, β€˜Running Away with the Hairdresser’ has proved to be one of the National Museum and Galleries of Wales’s most popular acquisitions.
Kevin returned to live in Wales in 1995 and has quickly established himself at the forefront of the renaissance in Welsh painting. While his work is primarily concerned with human relationships, the influence of the south Wales landscape is strongly felt in his paintings. He was elected to the Royal Cambrian Academy in 2007.

 

I will include some links at the end of the post to various articles featuring Kevin that may be of interest.Hopefully this will be the start of an ongoing project where I hope to spend time with artists in their studio or place of work where I can document the process of their discipline whether they are a painters, photographers, illustrators, musicians, sculptors etc

This 1st post may be an exception as Kevin gave me unlimited access to him and his studio for which I am so grateful.

 

I was very lucky with my timing as Kevin was in the middle of a painting on the day we arranged for me to pop over to do the studio shoot.

I was privileged to watch him work and then re work the painting “SuperMam”Β which will feature in most of the following images, please excuse the slight colour variations as obviously they are a mix of Film & Digital.

The paintings need to be seen in life to appreciate them Β πŸ™‚

The images were shot on a mixture of Kodak Portra 400, Fuji Pro 400H for the colour and ilford HP5+ and Kodak T-Max for the B&W.

Cameras used were Nikon F100, Mamiya 645, Mamiya C330 and Leica M2.

Digital were Nikon D600, Fuji XT-1 and Fuji X-Pro1
